Urodynamic analysis with bethanechol supersensitivity test

Abstract
A total of 38 patients underwent the bethanechol denervation supersensitivity test. The 38 patients consisted of 28 men and 10 women, ranging in age from 16 to 84 years, with an average of 49 years. The primary causes of urodynamic assessment
were
19
cases of neurogenic bladder, 9 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia and 10 cases of normal control. Before and after 2.0mg bethanechol chloride injection, urodynamic evaluations were done and many urodynamic parameters were checked. No
significant
changes of uroflow rate and the amount of residual urine were demonstrated after the bethanechol injection. (p>0.05) Among the 19 patients without a neurogenic bladder the false positive rate was 5.3 percents. Among the 9 patients with a
neurogenic
bladder proved by careful neurologic exminations, the false negative rate was 22.2 percents. Although the bethanechol denervation supersensitive test is a widely acclaimed method for distinguishing neurogenic from non neurogenic causes of
bladder,
a
positive bethanechol test is not by itself indicative of neurogenic bladder nor does a negative test exclude this diagnosis.
